The Challenge 
Transforming The Bradbury Building, one of Downtown Los Angeles’ most photographed icons, into a brand was a rare and exhilarating journey for the Kilograph team. With no previous identity or formal digital presence, the client wanted to promote their co-working spaces and launch a Social Membership that grants access to the atmospheric escape that is the Wyman Bar. Our mission was to honor the building’s rich history while infusing it with a fresh, modern twist.

Inspiration Behind the Logo 

The first step was to create the logo, drawing inspiration directly from the typography on the stone facade over the entrances of both Broadway and 3rd Streets. Built in the late 1800s, the building’s letterforms evoke the budding Art Nouveau era. 

 

A secondary monogram mark was designed for situations that allow for a more modern, playful representation of the brand. The spirited color combinations are a bolder expression of The Bradbury Building’s full brand palette.

Developing the Color Palette and Brand Typography 

The creation of the brand color palette was the perfect opportunity to connect the building’s storied past with the present. We drew inspiration from the iconic interiors, including the Belgian marble staircases and intricate Mexican tile floors. These details effortlessly allowed us to further weave the building’s history into the branding itself. 

The typography provided another chance to blend past and present, pairing a classic, timeless serif with a modern, sans serif. Together, these typefaces balance each other, blending the timeless appeal of the past with the innovative spirit of the present, resulting in an essence that is both grounded and forward-looking.

In addition to designing a visual identity system for the Bradbury Building, our deliverables encompassed creating an online presence to highlight its inspiring workspaces, designing promotional materials and branding key building touchpoints.
